Al-Hamra, Jeddah: where it is and what the homes are like
Al-Hamra is one of Jeddah’s coastal districts in the centre of the city, stretching between the Red Sea to the west and Madinah Road to the east. It looks over the Al-Hamra Corniche and the Middle Corniche, whose gardens face the King Fahd Fountain. The district has several consulates and official buildings, hotels and restaurants on the waterfront, and it is one of the long-established areas where Jeddah families have lived for generations.
Homes are a mix of older, spacious villas with formal reception salons, apartment buildings of many sizes, including studios and small flats for people working in the city centre, and furnished flats near the Corniche. Requests vary widely as a result: from two hours in a studio to a full day with two maids in a villa hosting the wider family.
What sets Al-Hamra apart is how central hospitality is to its homes. Many families keep a guest salon, silver and brass serving sets and dallahs, and host on Fridays, at Eid and through Ramadan. So this guide starts with what a home needs on the day of an occasion.
How many maids and hours for each occasion in Al-Hamra?
A small gathering is fine with one maid for six hours, while anything above twenty guests needs two. This table helps you pick the right booking:
Our suggestions for Al-Hamra homes by type of gathering and number of guests:
| Occasion | Suggested booking | What the maid handles |
|---|---|---|
| Afternoon coffee for a few | 4 hours, one maid | Salon and cups ready, tidy-up afterwards |
| Family Friday lunch | 6 hours, one maid | Table set, serving and washing up |
| Ramadan iftar with relatives | 6 evening hours or two maids | Table laid, serving, kitchen after iftar |
| Eid reception | Two maids, 4 hours or more | Entrances, salons, bathrooms and hospitality throughout |
| Large event at the villa | Two maids, 8 hours | Preparation before, serving during, full clean after |
The maid does not cook banquets, but she lays the table, warms and serves what the family has prepared, and washes dishes as she goes so the kitchen is not buried at the end of the day. If food comes from a restaurant or outside kitchen, she plates it and arranges it on the table.
Hourly maid prices in Al-Hamra, Jeddah
Hourly maid prices in Al-Hamra start from SAR 92 for two hours, SAR 138 for four hours and SAR 296 for two maids over four hours. The table runs from the larger bookings down, since those are the most requested in the district’s villas:
Starting prices for Al-Hamra homes; your final amount depends on hours, maids, home size and whether the visit is morning or evening:
| Visit type | Details | From (SAR) |
|---|---|---|
| Two maids for four hours | Villa prepared for an occasion or reset after it | 296 |
| Eight hours | One maid for the whole occasion day | 274 |
| Six hours | Salon, kitchen, guest bathroom and bedrooms | 204 |
| Four hours | A flat, or part of a villa | 138 |
| Two hours | Studio or a short task | 92 |
| Each added hour | If hosting runs on | 52 |
If guests stay longer than planned, the maid can stay an hour or more when she is free, with each extra hour from SAR 52. Evening, Friday and Eid slots, the busiest times for gatherings, are priced at booking, and we advise reserving them a few days ahead.

Before an occasion the maid polishes silver and brass trays, dallahs and serving sets, and washes and dries cups and glasses until they shine; this is one of the most requested jobs in Al-Hamra homes. It usually takes one to two hours depending on how many pieces there are.

- Silver pieces: wiped with a soft cotton cloth and the silver polish the family provides, never scrubbed with anything rough.
- Dallahs and brass: washed inside with warm water and dried straight away so water leaves no marks.
- Glasses and crystal: hand-washed one by one and dried with a lint-free cloth.
- Table linen and napkins: washed and ironed the day before, if you wish.
- After the occasion: every piece is dried fully and returned to its cabinet.
Antique and valuable pieces
If you have old or inherited pieces that are delicate, set them aside or tell the maid exactly how you like them cleaned, or keep them for yourself. She works carefully, but valuable pieces are your call.
Classic sofas and gilded tables in Al-Hamra salons
Reception salons in Al-Hamra’s older villas are not like modern lounges: velvet or embroidered classic sofas, wooden tables with gilded edges, lamps, glass ornaments and heavy curtains. The room needs care more than speed, so we set aside at least an hour for it on an occasion day. The maid vacuums upholstery and cushions with a soft nozzle, wipes wood with a dry or barely damp cloth and no strong cleaners so the gilding is not harmed, dusts lamps and ornaments, and vacuums the lower part of heavy curtains where dust settles, without taking them down or washing them, which is specialist work.
The guest bathroom: the last thing cleaned before arrival
The guest bathroom is cleaned about an hour before guests arrive, because it is the room visitors notice most. In Al-Hamra villas it often has a marble basin, brass or gold-tone taps and a large mirror, all of which show water spots quickly.

The maid cleans the basin and marble with a product that leaves no film, buffs the tap and the brass mirror frame dry, cleans the toilet and floor, then sets out folded hand towels, refills the soap and adds fragrance if you like. If she is staying through the gathering she can check it once or twice to keep it tidy.
Studios and small flats in Al-Hamra
For a studio or one-bedroom flat in Al-Hamra, two hours is usually enough, starting from SAR 92: kitchen and bathroom cleaned, floor swept and mopped, bedding changed, and clothes washed or ironed. Many residents of these flats work at nearby offices and prefer a weekly visit on their day off or in the evening.
For two or three bedrooms, four hours covers a full clean. A tip for older buildings in the district: tell us if there is no lift or the flat is on a high floor, so we can allow for it when estimating arrival.
The occasion day, step by step
If you book two maids or a full day for a reception, this is the order we suggest so no time is wasted:
- 1First hour: entrance and main salon cleaned, seating arranged, rugs vacuumed.
- 2Second hour: serving ware polished, cups and glasses washed, coffee corner set up.
- 3An hour before arrival: guest bathroom, then a final pass through the salon.
- 4During the visit: serving, collecting dishes and washing them as they come in.
- 5After guests leave: salon reset, sets returned to cabinets, kitchen and floors cleaned.
To keep things smooth
Make a short list of what you want served and arranged, and put the serving sets in one place before the maid arrives, so she does not have to search the cupboards.
What an hourly maid does not do
An hourly maid does not cook full meals, is not left alone with children or elderly relatives, does not work on facades or at height, and does not carry heavy furniture. All other indoor housework is part of her visit.
Part of her visit
Salons and rooms cleaned and tidied, floors swept and mopped, dishes and the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry and ironing, windows from inside, and rugs vacuumed.
At occasions
Laying the table, serving refreshments and putting the home right afterwards, getting it ready before the holy month and Eid, and cleaning when you move in or out.
Left to others
Banquet cooking, sole care of little ones or older relatives, facades and high places, and moving heavy furniture.
Please have one of the ladies of the house at home throughout the visit, especially on the day of an occasion, to direct the maid on how the hospitality should be set out.
How legal employment protects your family
Because whoever uses a worker who is not legally employed exposes themselves to jail and heavy fines. We send legally employed maids with valid iqamas, trained and in a modest uniform, and we handle their transport.
Take the Jawazat rules: giving a lift to, housing or hiring someone who violates residency or labour law, a domestic worker among them, can mean SAR 100,000 for every such person and half a year behind bars. A domestic worker’s employer is also not allowed to let her work in other homes; the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development’s Domestic Workers Regulation penalises this with a fine of up to SAR 20,000 or a recruitment ban of up to 3 years. So do not borrow a neighbour’s or relative’s maid for your occasion; book through a company.
