Where is Ad Dahu and what are its homes like?

Ad Dahu lies in central Riyadh, and references list it among the Old City neighbourhoods that grew up around the historic core. It is small, its inner streets are narrow lanes known by number, such as “Lane 20” (Mamar 20) which appears in property listings, and its homes are a mix of old traditional houses and small apartment buildings.

Like other parts of the old centre, the district is going through redevelopment, and many of its buildings are now rented to workers and bachelors, while the families who remain are relatively few. We say this plainly because the service here is for those families: people still living in the old family house, those renting a flat in a small building, and those getting ready to leave the area for a new home. Whichever applies, it is best if a lady of the house is at home while the maid works.

New to the idea? Hourly help here means a cleaner who comes for the hours you book and then goes home; nobody moves in. A traditional house in Ad Dahu is nothing like a modern flat in north Riyadh. Rooms open onto an inner courtyard, there is a storeroom or two that has filled up over the years, the washing machine may sit in the courtyard or on the roof, and a narrow staircase links the floors. So this page is built around three jobs these homes need more than most: sorting the storeroom, doing the laundry, and cleaning when the family moves.

That does not mean every home here is a traditional house. There are also small buildings with family flats, which need shorter visits much like flats elsewhere in the centre, starting from 2 or 4 hours depending on the number of rooms.

What does an hourly maid get done in a traditional house in Ad Dahu?

In a 4-hour visit to a traditional house, the maid cleans the rooms in use, the kitchen and bathrooms, sweeps and mops the inner courtyard, and washes and hangs out the laundry. If the house is large or has a storeroom that needs sorting, a 5- or 6-hour visit is a better fit, or you can give the storeroom a visit of its own.

Order matters in an old house. The maid starts with areas that need time to dry, such as bathrooms and the courtyard floor, then the kitchen, then the rooms, and finishes with the indoor floors. Because dust in the old centre drifts in through doors opening onto the courtyard and through older windows, dusting surfaces and the inside of window frames takes a fixed slice of every visit.

Rooms

Dusting, straightening floor mattresses and bedding, vacuuming rugs and mopping floors.

Kitchen

Washing up, wiping counters and cupboard fronts, cleaning the hob and sink.

Bathrooms

Cleaning toilets, basins, floors and the nearby wall tiles.

Inner courtyard

Sweeping and mopping the floor, without hosing it down.

The courtyard in a traditional house

Sweeping and mopping the inner courtyard are included, but hosing down large yards with lots of water is not. If your courtyard is very large, tell us when booking so we can plan the time.

How much is an hourly maid in Ad Dahu?

An hourly maid in Ad Dahu starts from SAR 138 for a 4-hour visit with one maid. The table picks the options that suit a traditional house and moving-related jobs:

Visit typeDetailsFrom (SAR)
4-hour visitA routine clean of a small traditional house or a flat138
5-hour visitA two-floor house, or cleaning plus a small storeroom184
6-hour visitA full day for the storeroom and kitchen together204
Two maids for 4 hoursCleaning after moving out or before handing the house over296
2-hour visitOne job: washing and hanging out, or the kitchen92

Three things set your total: hours, how many maids, and how big the house is, with the shift as a fourth. We confirm any evening, Friday or holiday rate at the time you book, and a job missing from this list can be priced for you over WhatsApp.

Sorting the storeroom in an old house: how does the maid work?

The maid works through the storeroom in order: she moves the lighter items out to a nearby spot, cleans dust and any dead insects from the shelves and floor, then puts things back sorted, with everyday items at the front and bottom and rarely used ones at the back. What stays and what goes is always your decision; the maid gathers anything that looks spoiled or expired in one place for you to check.

Storerooms in old houses usually hold a mix of dry food, serving sets for occasions, old tools, and bags and boxes nobody remembers the contents of. So we suggest keeping a list of what you are looking for, and deciding before the visit whether you want food sorted by expiry date or simply the space cleaned and arranged.

  • Dry food: sorted by type, with expired items set aside for you to decide on.
  • Serving sets: washed if dusty and arranged on their own shelf.
  • Heavy boxes: stay where they are or are moved by a family member; heavy lifting is outside the visit.
  • High shelves: only what can be reached safely from a stable household step is sorted.

Pests and damp

If the maid finds signs of rodents, heavy insect activity or damp in the storeroom walls, she will tell you, but pest control and damp repairs need a specialist. Clean and sort after treatment, not before.

Does the storeroom in your Ad Dahu home need sorting? Book a 5- or 6-hour visit and tell us its size.

Laundry in a traditional house: what if the machine is in the courtyard or on the roof?

The maid does the washing wherever the machine is, hangs it on the family’s line or rack, then folds the dry clothes and returns them to the rooms. If the machine is on the roof, the roof must be safe with a parapet wall; climbing onto unprotected roofs is not part of the visit.

Older homes sometimes have a twin-tub semi-automatic machine, where clothes are moved by hand from the wash tub to the spin tub. The maid can use it, but it takes longer, so if there is a lot of laundry allow at least 2 hours of the visit for it, or book a separate short visit for laundry from SAR 92.

One thing people overlook in old houses: a big wash needs somewhere to dry away from lane dust. If the courtyard opens onto the street or the day is dusty, it is better to dry clothes in a well-ventilated room or hold part of the laundry over to another visit. The maid will raise this before she starts so clean washing does not come back dusty.

Moving out of Ad Dahu? Cleaning before and after you leave

Moving out of an old house usually involves three stages: sorting the storeroom and cupboards before packing, cleaning the house once the furniture has gone, and cleaning the new home before you move in. An hourly maid can help with all three, but packing, transporting and carrying furniture stay with the removal company or the family.

Once the furniture is out, everything hidden under wardrobes and beds and behind the fridge comes to light: years of dust, marks on the floors and scuffs on the lower walls. At this stage two maids for 4 hours work well, one on the kitchen and bathrooms and one on the rooms and courtyard, so the house is finished in a day and handed to its owner, or to whoever is redeveloping it, in good order.

  1. 1A few days before packing: a visit to sort the storeroom and cupboards and separate what you will take from what you will leave.
  2. 2On or after moving day: a visit to clean the old house once the furniture is gone.
  3. 3Before moving into the new home: a visit to clean it before the furniture arrives, wherever in Riyadh you are moving.

A practical tip

Book the new-home visit before moving day, not after. Cleaning an empty house is far easier and faster than cleaning around boxes.

The old family house that opens for occasions: how does the maid get it ready?

If your family has moved to another district and the old family house in Ad Dahu is opened only for Eid or family gatherings, getting it ready takes a longer visit than a home lived in every day. A house shut for weeks gathers dust on every surface, picks up a closed-up smell, and collects leaves and grit blown into the corners of the courtyard.

For this we suggest a 5- or 6-hour visit a day or two before the occasion. The maid opens the windows to air the house first, dusts from top to bottom, vacuums the majlis seating and floor mattresses, cleans the bathrooms and kitchen, sweeps and mops the courtyard, and then sets out the serving ware. After the occasion, a 4-hour visit is usually enough to wash up, put the bedding away and close the house clean until next time.

  • Check before the visit that water and electricity are working in the closed house.
  • Open the house yourself or with a family member present; we do not take keys to closed houses.
  • If bedding has been stored for a long time, ask for it to be washed on the first visit so it dries before guests arrive.
  • If air conditioners have not run for a while, cleaning inside them needs a technician; the maid only wipes the covers.

How does the maid reach your home in the lanes of Ad Dahu?

Our driver brings the maid as near as a car can get, which may be the entrance to your lane rather than your front door, as some lanes are too narrow for cars to get through easily. So we agree a clear meeting point with you, and ask that someone from the family meets the maid there on the first visit.

  • Send your exact home location pin, with the lane number if you know it.
  • Name a meeting point: the lane entrance, a nearby mosque, or a well-known shop.
  • Keep your phone on around the arrival time.
  • Visit time is counted from when the maid reaches your home, not from the meeting point.

Plans changed? A WhatsApp message sent in good time lets us move the visit or send someone else. You can also ask for the same maid next time, subject to availability, which helps a lot in Ad Dahu because she will already know the way to your door.

What are the limits of the visit, and are the maids legal?

Traditional houses raise questions that never come up in flats, so here are the limits of the visit using examples from this kind of home:

Yes

Sweeping and mopping the inner courtyard, rooms, kitchen and bathrooms, washing and ironing, the storeroom, dusting, window glass on the room side, hospitality set-up, moving cleans.

No

Hosing the courtyard, climbing onto a roof with no wall, the facade or outside of the windows, lifting wardrobes and heavy boxes.

Not her role

Cooking whole meals, staying alone with a child or an elderly relative, pools and gardens.

Tools

She carries the basic cleaning tools, and we settle the products with you at booking.

Every maid on our team holds a current iqama, has been trained and works in modest clothing. In old districts where unregistered labour is common, remember that the Domestic Workers Regulation bars a domestic worker from working for anyone except their employer. According to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, a violating employer faces a fine of no more than SAR 20,000 or a recruitment ban of up to 3 years, and the General Directorate of Passports punishes anyone who employs or shelters a residency violator with as long as 6 months in prison and a fine as high as SAR 100,000. Our maids are African, such as Kenyan and Ugandan, or Bangladeshi, depending on availability when you book.
