Buying a tank in Kuwait does not end at the showroom. A large tank needs a vehicle that carries it without scratching it or pressing into its wall, hands that know how to lift it onto a high roof, and a technician who sets it on a sound base. We are a transport and general services company, so we combine these steps into one order. This guide explains the types, layers, capacities and prices, and how to choose what suits your home before you pay.

What sets the price of a tank?
Capacity moves the price first, then the number of layers: a tank with an insulating layer costs more because it protects the water from heat. Next comes the material, as fibreglass and stainless steel cost more than polyethylene at large capacities, then wall thickness and shape, since a short or wall-hugging tank costs more than an upright one of the same capacity because its mould is more complex. Finally, the brand and what comes with the purchase: delivery, installation and fittings.
Our advice is to compare the full price, not the tank alone. A tank that is ten dinars cheaper can cost you more if you then need a separate vehicle to move it, workers to lift it and a technician to fit it.
The 1,000-litre water tank: who is it for?
A 1,000-litre water tank in Kuwait is a small tank holding about 220 gallons, starting from KWD 22.750. It suits annexes, chalets, stores, and anyone who needs a backup tank or one for irrigation and washing. Its dimensions are roughly 90 to 110 cm in diameter and 120 to 140 cm high, depending on the shape and the maker.
It is usually not enough to supply a whole family home, because household consumption in Kuwait is high. If this tank is going to feed the whole house, work out your consumption first using the method in the capacity section before you buy.
Water tank brands in the Kuwaiti market
The Kuwaiti market carries well-known local and Gulf tank brands, each with product lines in different materials and layers. The table summarises what each name is known for; availability of a given model changes from time to time:
| Brand | What it is known for |
|---|---|
| Al-Wataniya (National) | Polyethylene tanks from 250 to 2,250 gallons in three layers, insulated three-layer and four layers, plus a fibreglass factory |
| Nima | Multi-layer and fibreglass tanks, often searched for in the 1,000-gallon model |
| Al-Hajri | Fibreglass tanks for homes and buildings |
| Al-Muttahida (United) | Three- and four-layer polyethylene tanks and fibreglass tanks |
| Kuwait International | Upright and wall tanks in household capacities |
| Shiraa Al-Khaleej, Atyaf, Al-Arabi | Rotomoulded polyethylene, and expandable sectional GRP tanks |
| Al-Zamil | A Saudi brand available from some distributors in Kuwait |
A name alone is not enough to judge by. Ask about the real number of layers and the wall thickness, whether the inner layer is safe for contact with drinking water, and whether the lid seals well and has a vent filter. Two tanks from different brands with the same specification are closer to each other than two tanks from the same brand with different layers.
Polyethylene, fibreglass or stainless steel?
A multi-layer polyethylene tank is the most common in Kuwaiti homes because it is light, reasonably priced and made in one piece with no joints; fibreglass suits large capacities and sectional tanks; and stainless steel is chosen when hygiene and durability come first. The comparison below sets the differences side by side.
| Criterion | Multi-layer polyethylene | Fibreglass (GRP) | Stainless steel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight | Light and easy to lift | Medium | Heavier |
| Sun resistance | Good if the outer layer is UV-resistant | Good with an intact top coat | Excellent, but the water heats up unless insulated |
| Heat insulation | Excellent in tanks with a foam layer | Moderate unless insulated | Poor without outer insulation |
| Capacities | Up to about 2,000 gallons | Large, and can be assembled from panels | Varied |
| Repair | Hot-air welding | Fibreglass layers | Specialist welding |
| Price | From KWD 73 for 500 gallons | From KWD 80 | From KWD 188 |
| Best for | Most houses and villas | Buildings and large capacities | Commercial kitchens and those wanting a metal tank |
There are less common types in homes too: galvanised tanks, now used less because of rust; concrete underground tanks, which are built in place rather than bought ready-made; and sectional panel tanks, assembled on the roof for very large capacities.
Tank layers: what do 3, 4 and 5 layers mean?
Tank layers are bonded walls of different materials moulded together into the tank body: an outer layer that resists UV, a middle foam layer that insulates against heat, and a smooth white inner layer safe for drinking water. The more layers, the more protection from heat and light, and the higher the price.

- 3 layers: outer, a black middle layer that keeps light from the water so algae cannot grow, and a white inner layer. Suitable for shaded tanks or light use.
- Insulated 3 layers or 4 layers: adds a foam insulating layer that slows heat reaching the water; the usual choice for exposed roofs.
- 5 and 6 layers: thicker insulation or extra layers for rigidity, suiting roofs in full sun all day and anyone wanting cooler water in summer.
How to check the number of layers
Look at the rim of the lid opening, the only place where the wall section shows. You can tell the layers apart by their colours and see whether there really is a foam layer or just a different colour.
Even so, layers alone will not turn tank water cold in a Kuwaiti summer; they slow the heat down. If you want genuinely cooler water, read about installing a water tank cooler with the new tank.
Water tank capacities in gallons and litres
Water tanks in Kuwait are usually sold by the gallon, and the most requested capacities are 500, 750, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 gallons. Note that some Gulf factories state capacity in imperial gallons (about 4.55 litres) and some shops in US gallons (about 3.79 litres), so a 1,000-gallon tank may mean about 4,550 litres or about 3,790 litres. Ask the seller for the capacity in litres so you can compare accurately.

How to work out the right capacity from your water meter
Instead of guessing by the number of people, use your own figures. Note your water meter figure today and again a week later, then divide the difference by seven to get your home’s daily use. Then choose a tank that holds one to two days of that use, so you do not run dry if filling is delayed or supply in your area is interrupted.
If you have an underground tank filled from the mains that pumps up to the roof tank, the roof tank can be smaller because it is refilled constantly. If the roof tank is your only tank, choose the largest capacity your roof can carry.
The weight of water on the roof: a question sellers rarely raise
A litre of water weighs roughly a kilogram, so a full 1,000-imperial-gallon tank puts about 4.5 tonnes on the roof, and 2,000 gallons about 9 tonnes, before the weight of the tank itself. The concrete roof of a modern house usually carries normal household tanks when they sit over a wall or column, but a large tank in the middle of an old ceiling or on top of a room added later needs an engineer’s opinion. That is why we ask where the tank will go before suggesting a capacity.
A warning for older roofs
If you see cracks in the ceiling of the room under the tank, or the roof has leaked before, do not put up a tank larger than the old one before checking the ceiling. If the roof needs insulation, it is better done before the new tank goes in: roof insulation in Kuwait.
Tank shapes: upright, horizontal, short and wall tanks
The shape of a tank is chosen according to the space and height available: upright tanks are the most common and the cheapest per gallon; horizontal tanks suit places with limited height or exposure to wind; short, wide tanks suit roofs where a tall tank is not allowed; and wall tanks, sometimes called fence tanks, sit flush against a wall in narrow passages.
- Upright: a small footprint and a large capacity, needing a level, solid base.
- Horizontal: a low centre of gravity makes it more stable, but it needs a longer space.
- Short: less visible from the street, suiting roofs with low parapets.
- Wall (fence) tank: narrow, fitted in the yard or passages, with smaller capacities.
- Underground: buried or built below ground level, filled from the mains and pumping up to the roof tank.

Delivering your tank from the showroom to your roof
Water tank delivery in Kuwait is part of our core work as a transport company: we carry the tank on a vehicle suited to its size, strap it with wide belts that do not press into its wall, deliver to every governorate, and then lift it onto the roof in whatever way the house allows.

A plastic tank looks tough, but it is easily damaged in transit if handled wrongly: a thin rope pulled tight around its wall can leave a mark that turns into a crack in the heat, dragging it along the ground scratches the outer layer that protects it from the sun, and dropping it a short distance onto its rim can break its base from inside. So we carry it rather than drag it, and we lay padding on the vehicle bed beneath it.
Lifting to the roof depends on the size and the house: small and medium tanks go up by rope over the parapet with workers who know how to spread the weight, while large tanks or tall houses need a small crane. In buildings the crane arm cannot reach, we plan a route up the stairs if the tank size allows, or suggest a shorter shape that will pass.
Installing the new tank, step by step
Installing a new tank starts with a level, solid base cleared of gravel, then setting the tank with its outlet facing the pipework, fitting the inlet, outlet, overflow and float, then filling and testing. Installation starts from KWD 18.750.

- Base: concrete or steel, perfectly level, wider than the tank base, with nothing protruding.
- Position: outlet towards the distribution line, with enough room to reach the lid and float later.
- Fittings: inlet and outlet with valves, using PTFE tape or a suitable sealant, without over-tightening plastic fittings.
- Overflow and venting: an overflow pipe draining away from the roof and walls, and a sealed lid with a filtered vent.
- Float: fitted and set to a level that leaves a margin below the overflow.
- Testing: fill the tank, watch every joint, run the pump and check the pressure in the house.
If the mains water in your area arrives carrying sediment, this is the right time to fit a central filter on the inlet, so the new tank stays clean from day one.
Used water tanks for sale in Kuwait
A used tank can be a sensible choice for irrigation, washing or backup storage, but it is a risk for drinking water if you do not know its history. Before buying, inspect it inside and out, find out what it held, and never buy a tank that held chemicals or fuel to store your household water.

What to check on a used tank
- Inner layer: smooth and white, or yellowed, cracked or spotted green with algae.
- Outer wall: any flaking or heavy fading that shows the sun has destroyed the outer layer.
- Floor and base: dents or fine cracks around the lower edges.
- Fittings: sound, or broken and in need of replacement.
- Smell: any smell other than water points to previous use unsuitable for drinking.
- Lid: sealing properly or broken, since a replacement lid is not always available for every brand.
If you buy a used tank for household water, clean and disinfect it before use and confirm it is sound with a full fill test. We will inspect a used tank with the customer if wanted, and deliver and install it like a new one.
The other way round, if you are replacing your old tank, we remove it and take it away on the day the new one goes in, so it is not left in the yard or on the pavement. If the old tank is still fit for another use, we tell you before we load it. And if you have not decided yet, compare first with water tank repair, as some faults cost less to fix than a new tank.
Subsidised ration tanks for citizens
Kuwaiti citizens can obtain water tanks at subsidised prices through ration programmes distributed via the co-operative societies, usually from a local factory in set household capacities. Details, available capacities and eligibility are available from the co-operative in your area.
If you buy a tank through the ration scheme, we can collect it from the co-op, bring it home, lift it and install it, with installation from KWD 18.750 as for any other tank.
Tanks by use: not all are for drinking water
The right tank depends on what it will hold: a drinking-water tank needs a food-grade inner layer and a sealed lid, an irrigation or well-water tank can be simpler, and tanks for factories and labs may need a material that does not react with treated water. Decide the use first, then choose the material and layers.
- Drinking and household water: polyethylene with a food-grade inner layer, fibreglass with a drinking-safe coating, or stainless steel.
- Irrigation and washing yards or cars: a simpler tank or a sound used one, best kept separate from the drinking tank.
- Rainwater and well water: a tank with a strainer on the inlet, since this water carries sand and dust.
- Treated and demineralised water: a chemically resistant material, checked with the maker for the type of water.
- Pressure tanks: small vessels with the pump that keep pressure steady; they are not storage tanks.
Looking after the tank after purchase
Care for a new tank starts on installation day: a first clean before drinking, then cleaning and disinfection twice a year, the lid always kept sealed, and the float and fittings watched. A tank that is looked after lasts many years without the water changing colour or taste.
In a Kuwaiti summer, keep an eye on the outer layer: if it starts to fade or flake, shade the tank or cover it with a reflective jacket before the sun reaches the inner layers. After dust storms, check the lid and the vent filter, as dust that enters settles on the floor and feeds algae. Every few months, go up to the roof and look under the base; any damp there is an early sign that is easy to deal with.
Common mistakes when buying a water tank
The costliest tank-buying mistakes in Kuwait are choosing a capacity without knowing your consumption, buying a three-layer tank for a roof in full sun all day, and ignoring the base and old fittings. Other mistakes we come across:
- Comparing the tank price alone and forgetting delivery, lifting and installation.
- Not asking which gallon is meant, and ending up with less capacity than you thought.
- Fitting a new tank onto tired fittings and valves, so the leak returns within weeks.
- Placing the tank where the lid and float cannot be reached later.
- Moving the tank yourself with a thin rope on a small vehicle, so it arrives scratched or dented.
- Leaving the new tank without a first clean before drinking from it.
Questions to ask any seller
What is the capacity in litres? How many layers, and what are they? Is the inner layer safe for drinking water? Does the lid seal and have a vent filter? What does the price include in delivery and installation?
